Radical Recoveries
Recovery is Radical.
Why Yoga Therapy Works
Yoga Therapy works by increasing introspective awareness. It really is that simple.
Why? Because the practices of Yoga addresses the whole person, not an aspect of a person.
Why Yoga Therapy Endures
Yoga Therapy endures because it is a self reliant practice.
The practices of Yoga are an individual practice, It requires nothing outside of yourself. It doesn’t cost a penny to continue your practice once established, you don’t need transportation, you don’t need permission.
The benefits of Yoga in recovery are undeniable
Yoga cultivates a state of present moment, non judgmental awareness as well as the ability to sense and interpret internal body signals like tension, breathing patterns, heart rate and emotional states. These skills directly and intelligently interrupt the automatic cycles of addiction.
The practices of Yoga train the individual to notice subtle shifts in your mind and energy as well the body. For example, muscle tension, shallow breathing, increase in mental chatter or inner narrative. The basic teachings of yoga that are accessible to all people teach us that all states are temporary. It reminds us that even states of discomfort, emotional pain, desire, craving and desperation will pass. This understanding allows us to experience these moments as a temporary wave of experience rather than an irresistible force, allowing the state to peak and pass without acting on it, or seeking to change it. This simple understanding reduces impulsivity and compulsion, improving relapse prevention.
How to get involved
I support people in recovery with yoga, yoga therapy and mindfulness at PHP and IOP centers throughout the Monadnock region including Avenues Recovery in Dublin NH and Mountain View Retreat in Marlborough NH.
I also support individuals in recovery beyond PHP and IOP as well on a one on one basis and in small groups. These groups are offered monthly and are donation based. The small groups are intended to support the individual with a touch point for their yoga practice and to connect in a meaningful way with other individuals in recovery. This small group does not require any UA’s to participate. In order to join this small group an initial application is required.
Monthly small group offerings are offered once a month in person in Keene NH and once a month online, live streamed. The days and times will be offered after the initial application has been reviewed. To request an application to join the small group, please use the contact form at the bottom of this page.
